Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

I love Joss Whedon.  As should everyone.  He has yet another amazing idea/show that he made.  It's called Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.  What is fantastic about this project is that he is posting the whole thing online for free before he sells it on DVD.  This online musical stars Neil Patrick Harris (who steals every scene in HIMYM),  Nathan Fillion (a Joss Whedon favorite from Buffy and Firefly), and Felicia Day (don't know her as much, but she was on Buffy).  It's the story of a lowly supervillain (Harris), the hero who harasses him (Fillion), and the girl he's afraid to talk to (Day).   The teaser trailer is more awesome than anyone could expect.  The musical is going to premier in three parts.

ACT ONE (Wheee!) will go up Tuesday July 15
ACT TWO (OMG!) will go up Thursday July 17
ACT THREE (Denouement!) will go up Saturday July 19

All of these episodes will be online until midnight July 20.  Then it will be available for downloading (small fee) shortly thereafter with a DVD "with the finest and bravest extras in all the land".  For updates about the whole thing go here.  I'm going to be on vacation this week...but I may have to hunt down an internet connection just for this.

Terminator 4 Casting

So it seems, according to Empire, it's possible that Helena Bonham Carter could be in the new Terminator 4 movie.  I love her.  She can do crazy well (see HP Order of Pheonix or Sweeney Todd) and she can do loving (see Charlie & Chocolate Factory or Wallace & Gromit).  I'm interested in seeing what kind of character she would do in this movie.  I'm excited about this movie, even though I haven't seen the third one because the whole series seems to be in a remake mode.  There's the new Sarah Connor Chronicles tv series, which I love (yay for Summer Glau being back on TV), and this new movie has Christian Bale as John Connor.  I'm pretty sure that won't be a mistake; anyone would follow him in an apocalypse.

WALL*E vs. Wanted

Vs.  So Disney/Pixar's WALL*E beat out Angelina Jolie's "Wanted" over the weekend.  Not that I'm surprised or anything, because let's face it, Pixar can do no wrong.  Now I did see both movies this weekend, but I'll admit I saw WALL*E first on Friday.  It was everything a good Pixar movie should be, with the added element of a scathing but cleverly presented social criticism about our laziness with regards to environmental conservation.  I'm pretty sure it was a slap in the face, but since it was done with a cute little robot, it appears that no one seemed to mind.  I also really enjoyed that they used the actual movie clip from the classic "Hello Dolly."  Inspiring choice.  Now as much as WALL*E is different than "Wanted", I liked them both for their respective genres.  I must admit that I mostly wanted to see "Wanted" for James McAvoy.  I mean, come on.  The guy is hot, and he has been for a while.  I was really anxious to see how he would perform as an "unlikely action star" along the same lines as Matt Damon in the Bourne series.  Watching this movie, you could definitely tell it was, stylistically, based off of a graphic novel series (Mark Miller and J.G. Jones) though it seems the storyline is only loosely based on the series.  I really enjoyed watching this movie.  I like the effects shots and the action sequences were amazing.  I'm fairly sure the stunt of James McAvoy being scooped up by a moving car is going to be one of my all-time favorite stunts (occurs about min 2:45 in this clip).  Both movies rock, just pick the one you're in the mood for.

Quantum of Solace Teaser

Holy cow!   There is finally a teaser trailer for the new Bond film and it's freakin awesome.  Like we didn't need another reason to be excited about the second installment of this revitalized franchise.  You should watch now regardless of what you think of Bond.  The next thing to look forward to is a proper trailer that does more than "tease" us for an annoyingly short minute and a half.

New Pictures from HBP

There are new movie stills from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.  While some of these images have been floating around the internet in less than high quality, filmonic.com has some nice versions they just poster here.  Three of the pictures are of the trio, while the fourth picture is of two characters from the Slytherin House.

Kung Fu Panda

"Find your courage, find your skill, and never lose your appetite"

This is hands down the movie to see this weekend.  Assuming you've already seen Indy IV and are tired of hearing about Sex and the City, Kung Fu Panda is a breath of fresh air, Chinese-take-out style.  This charming Dreamworks picture features an all-star cast of Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen and Lucy Liu among others.  I think Jack Black will do a phenomenal job and who can resist him when he shows up to the Cannes festival with about 50 giant pandas.  I'm also looking forward to the performances of actual martial artists, even though it's only their voices.  It adds some sort of strange validity to the story somehow.  To see an actual trailer, go here; for an awesome clip about dumplings, go here.

Angels and Demons Movie

This is slightly old news (about a month), but I'm very excited that Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge, Star Wars) has been cast as Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca in Dan Brown's Angels and Demons.  This particular book was the prequel, and in my opinion better story, to the very controversial The DaVinci Code.  For those who know me, you know that I have loved Ewan McGregor ever since hearing him sing in Moulin Rouge.  I am actually excited about this movie now because I think he will do an amazing job with such an interesting character, provided we don't get distracted by Tom Hanks creepy hairdo.

Bones Review

So in honor of the blog that inspired me to start one, I wanted to write my first review on the tv show Bones.  I literally watched all three seasons in about 2 1/2 weeks.  It was fantastic.  This show is a forensic show specializing in using bones to solve a murder.  It stars the enchanting Emily Deschanel (Glory Road, and sister of indie fav Zooey Deschanel) as Dr. Temperance Brennan, affectionately called "Bones" by her partner.  This FBI partner is Special Agent Seeley Booth, played by the amazing David Boreanaz (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) who has created his own following from starring in shows imagined by cult creator Joss Whedon.  I wrongly assumed that since the premise centers on an anthropologist helping solve murders, this show would be another poor man's version of CSI (i.e. CSI:Miami, CSI:NY, NCIS, etc).  Being a chemistry graduate student, I enjoy the science of the show.  I can understand and follow the techniques of the show even without knowing the anthropological names of everything, and I especially appreciate the "nerd humor" often present between the squints.  However, this is not the actual strength of the show and is not why it has such a strong and faithful following.  The true beauty of the series is the focus on the relationships between the characters, in particular Booth and Brennan.  Unlike other forensic based shows, Bones strategically focuses on the relationship between the colder, scientific Brennan and the heroic, but emotionally driven Booth.  I realize the harsh stereotype that is assigned to Brennan (not all scientists have trouble relating to people), but it allows for growth in the character.  It enhances the show because Booth acts as a catalyst to her understanding of human behavior and psychology.

Most of the other characters in the show have focused on the hard science of the show.  Dr. Jack Hodgins (T.J. Thyne), Dr. Zack Addy (Eric Millegan), Angela (Michaela Conlin) and C
amille (Tamara Taylor) provide the scientific evidence for each case.  Hodgins and Zack often add the sincere nerdy humor that is truly present in scientific labs.  It is a relief to know that other people can realize scientific humor and accurately portray it to a general audience.  It makes me feel slightly better about being a chemistry nerd.  Angela is Brennan's best friend and represents the humanity within the lab environment.  Camille was introduced mainly as Booth's love interest, but has finally settled in as a member of the lab and has dissociated herself from being a romantic interest.  At the beginning of this series, there were more characters that focused on the hard science as opposed to the human behavior.  Recently there have been more additions to focus on the other aspects of the show/case.  Dr. Caroline Julian (Patricia Belcher) is a DA who offers her less than subtle opinions and rightly pushes Booth and Brennan to their first kiss.  Caroline is like a breath of fresh air every time she is on screen.  She never holds back and it's a joy to watch her energy.  Dr. Lance Sweets (John Francis Daley) is the couples therapist for Booth and Brennan who pokes and asks them difficult questions about their relationship.  I love watching the scenes with Sweets.  He asks the questions we often want to ask and points out slight nuances of the relationship that we are watching.  The other random character that adds a lot of insight is Max Keenan (Ryan O'Neal), Brennan's father.  He challenges Brennan's ideals of justice and family.

For the die hard fans of the show, we're all enamored with Booth and Brennan's relationship.  We anxiously watch each glance and reaction waiting for them to realise and act on the love they have
for each other.  Amid the science and FBI cases, this show has so many different types of emotions involved: excitement, heartbreak, frustration and love.  I'm excited to watch season 4 along with everyone else.

Huge Harry Potter News

Thought I would start of my site with a big news update. According to her website, J.K. Rowling has created an 800 word prequel for Harry Potter.  She, among several other authors, were asked to contribute a piece of writing to be auctioned off for charity.  This entry particularly is expected to raise a considerable amount of cash for the event.  The excellent news is that the prequel will eventually be published along with all the other contributers.

For HP fans everywhere, this is AMAZING news.  Having declared that she will not continue to write any further books continuing the story of Harry Potter, this is a gem.  The prequel is going to focus on James Potter and Sirius Black 3 years before Harry is born.  For those of you who do not realize the enormity of this news, I pity you.  You should get your butt out of the chair and go buy and read these books.  I find it completely fascinating how 800 words will probably raise more money for charity than many people will make in 5 years.

Hmm....This is new

So I used to have a xanga account, but I updated that on a less than frequent basis.  I've decided to work on a new blog, just for the heck of it.  However I hope to have this one be a little more thematic.  For those who don't know me, I am an entertainment nut.  I love all kinds of movies, and have seen many.  I love music, but I don't pretend to be a music critic by any means.  I enjoy reading though I haven't read a huge range of books.  So this blog hopes to be a review/comment/rant about random entertainment info.

Music
Now don't get me wrong; I love music.  However, I am not one that has a refined taste in music (or what I like to refer to as being a "music snob").  I know good music when I hear it and it's done well, but I enjoy all kinds of music (good and crappy).  Knowing this, I am refraining from officially reviewing music at this point just to save myself from justifying ridiculous choices in taste.
